CROSSROADS PARK + NATURE PRESERVE

This village owned property consists of about 31.5 acres, much of which is DEC wetlands. Formerly was muck farm land for the most part.

Brief History
A Preliminary Conceptual Plan for the Village of Central Square Community Park and Nature Center was created in June 1993. In April 1997 a group of concerned citizen began the process of really looking at this piece of property. The general direction was to seek grant money under the Wetlands Reserve Program. If approved this land would be forever preserved as it is today.April 1998 was another informal meeting. In general, those who attended wanted a low key, low impact and low maintenance park. Some possible plans could include nature walk areas, observation areas, a gazebo and tennis courts. However they did not want baseball field, basketball courts or playground type areas. This meeting followed the submission of an application for funds (Federal Grant) in March 1998. Some of the targeted wildlife species to preserve included Mallard and Wood Ducks as well as some varieties of warblers. To date, other than in about the Fall of 1999 when fences section were placed across the front of the park, not much has developed here. In the winter the park helps with snow removal and parking for the nearby snow mobile trail. This property remains pretty much untouched and has some trails that allow a peek into the beautiful wetlands we have in our village.
