VILLAGE HISTORICAL INFO

The Past Comes Alive in the Village of Central Square, NY! In early 2006, a new history project began as part of the Comprehensive plan for the Village of Central Square. One of the goals is to preserve our history. Volunteers decided to tackle the project of compiling and documenting our Hometown History.

The goal was and still is to record oral histories, interview citizens and capture their memories with photos, drawings, audio cassettes, and in print. The history will explore how our Village has changed over long periods of time. Another goal is to expand our knowledge about historic structures, architectural design, and lifestyles.

As part of this collection there have been educational programs for our community about our community. Many local scouts and their families have enjoyed learning about the rich history of our village by going on one of the many cemetery hikes. New to the collection are a driving tour and several walking tours!

We are dedicated to enriching the community and helping people get a vibrant look at the past. By knowing where we came from, we can be better equipped to make Central Square an even greater place to live in the future.

Currently there are monthly history meetings, showings and talks. Village Historian, Heather Stevens, also writes a history column entitled Cornerstone that runs an average of 2-3 times a month in the Citizen Outlet.

"Life is divided into three terms — that which was, which is, and which will be. Let us learn from the past to profit by the present, and from the present to live better in the future."
—William Wordsworth
